I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction regarding our recent experience at the Home Affairs office in Port Shepstone on 16/04/2025
We had made an official appointment to apply for our daughter's passport and traveled all the way from Port Edward specifically for this purpose. Upon arrival, we were informed that the scanner required for capturing our documents has not been working — and, to our dismay, that it has been out of order for nearly a month.
We were not contacted beforehand, nor was there any public notice to inform us of this issue. Instead, we were told on arrival that we would need to travel even further — to Scottburgh or Durban — without any indication of when the Port Shepstone scanner would be operational again. This is extremely frustrating and unacceptable.
Passports are essential documents, and the failure to maintain critical equipment at a government facility that provides such vital services shows a lack of regard for the public’s time, money, and planning. We booked our appointment in good faith and expected a functioning service, only to be turned away without assistance or clear solutions.
We request that urgent attention be given to repairing or replacing the non-functional scanner at the Port Shepstone branch, and that measures be taken to inform the public in advance when such essential services are unavailable.
We look forward to your prompt response and action.
Sincerely,
Dee Alberts
